Budget-Friendly Dollar Store Hacks for an Organized Home
“Organize Pot Lids Using a Magazine Holder”
I mean who the hell reads magazines, right? We’re just kidding. So go ahead and read those magazines; you may just save a journalist job. But, if not, you should stop by the dollar store and buy a magazine rack. Not only are they a wonderful way to keep the lids for your pots organized, but they also make for a great wall decor when hung. If you’re like most of us, then you’ve probably lost a couple of lids to the corners of your kitchen.
You wont turn that random cabinet into a magazine rack and get those lids out of there. Just be sure to get one that feels solid and has ample room to hold all your lids.
“Repurpose a Makeup Bag into a Compact First Aid Kit”
This is a handy little trick, which we hope you’ll never find yourself having to use it in real life. You could buy a clear, small make up bag from the Dollar Store & use it as a first-aid kit. Here are a couple reasons you may want to opt for one of these instead of box. First, instead of just chucking everything in a box, you can properly sort out all your supplies.
Second: you can take one of these anywhere with you. If you are going camping, hiking or anything else, just toss the bag in with your other gear and forget about it.
“Use S Hooks and a Curtain Rod to Showcase Your Jewelry”
This hack is for you, if you have excess jewelry that you do not know what to do with it. You just need two S hooks and small curtain rods that every dollar store carries. Throw your rods next to your mirror or on the back of your bathroom door and you have a mess-free spot for choosing and showing off jewelry. Also, it will prevent everything from going tangling together.
And if you don’t have enough jewelry yet to really justify something like this, then once again, this hack can work for your hats, jackets, scarves, or whatever other hangables you can think of.
“Organize Cutting Boards with Tension Rods”
Do you typically have your cutting boards out, or roughly stacked beside one another against a wall? However, there is a more effective method and that method is tension rods. Get yourself some tension rods (if you’re a neutral kitchen kind of gal, check the Dollar Store!) and use them as dividers. They’re cool, because if you get the right color, they are just part of your pantry or cabnet.
And they’re not just for cutting boards, either—you can also use ’em to stash bigger plates or sheet pans, too. And of course, they’re adjustable—and removable—if you ever want to switch things up.
“Organize Spices with a Shoe Holder”
It can be a nuisance trying to store herbs and spices. If they were all in one place, they would look so tidy and regimented, yet they’re generally so scattered. Fortunately there is a easy-to-use hack that will help you achieve this. This shoe holder from the Dollar Store can be used to organize and store herbs, spices and just about any other thing that will store in the pouches.
Needs pantry doors spice holders look stunning on pantry doors, although a kitchen door will do, too, if you not quite have enough room in your pantry for anything else.
“Store Takeout Menus in Plastic Folders”
Almost everybody keeps their takeout menus on their fridges or stuffed away somewhere in a drawer. Besides, be honest; they can look a bit ugly and typically look awful if you hang them under a magnet on a fridge and even fit tightly in a drawer. Instead, go grab some plastic folders and tuck your takeout menus in there. Store them on the inside of a pantry or cabinet door, and you will remember to use them.
It also looks a lot better than displaying them on the fridge, and plastic folders and adhesive tape are super cheap, so it wouldn’t even cost that much money.
“Use Shower Caddies to Organize Snacks”
Okay, so this is just a little hack that uses shower caddies. You know those little containers that you drape in the shower? Those are great for separating and organizing and storing other stuff besides shampoos and conditioners. They could be used to keep your fast food, like you can see in this image or, you could simply make use of these containers to store oils, spices, or some other kitchen necessities. Just try to find a nice color to pick it up.
You could place them in on the counter or on a reveal, or place them underneath your cupboard and use them to your tangible cleaners. Storage too is effortless as puppets don’t take much room when you’re not using them.
“Transform a Dish Rack into a Mail Organizer”
If you have space for items like a dish rack, it could be a fun little piece to help in organizing most disembarkings like mail in your foyer or kitchen. We suggest getting one that is more of a rustic one or looks more like a wire basket, but this is entirely up to you. Do you simply pick one up, place it onto the table, and begin your mail storage into it? That should help keep it off the table or out of drawers.
Of course, you don’t only have to use one of these for mail, and they’d look equally good holding stuff in a cabinet with glass doors or organizing your pantry.
“Use Plastic Trays to Organize Drawers”
If you’ve got a bathroom (or kitchen!) drawer that could use a little organization, this hack is for you! Buy some cheap plastic trays and chuck them in your drawers. They essentially operate as mini dividers to help you categorize and compartmentalize items when storing things by type or function. Or you can simply make it a bit more interesting by using differently shaped trays anddifferent sizes.
These will not only help keep your drawers tidy, but they also absorb spills if anything leaks/falls out of your drawer and you did not close it tightly enough, which is even better.
“Use Adhesive Hooks to Hang Cords”
But hey, it is time to dump out that cord drawer and we have a better alternative now. A few sticky hooks or a hanger never hurt to string all that chord up accordingly. No more digging through your cord drawer trying to find that specific cord you know you saw a few months ago. Now, thanks to this little hack, they are all visible and in order.
The amount of hooks you would need depends on how many cords you have, but you could run these all the way down your door, and you should be OK.
“Integrate File Boxes into Your Bathroom Decor”
We have way too much stuff and way too little storage in our bathrooms. That is, file boxes are just awesome organizational aids in helping your bathroom to stay organized. You could store cleaning supplies and toilet paper in them, or even use them as laundry baskets. And the best part is that the ones you can buy from the dollar store look very much at home in a bathroom.
It also works for anyone who may be tight on cabinet space or may not have enough shelves for towels or spare toiletries.
“Maintain a Clean Fridge with Placemats”
It is a pretty genius hack, and honestly, we are a little bit jealous that we never thought of it, since we hate cleaning out the fridge. Making placemats on the shelves of the fridge can help you keep that place at home cleaner. This should absorb any minor spills and prolong the interval between cleanings. When the placemat gets a little filthy, just replace it with an extra one.
Now, obviously, you’re still going to want to eventually wipe your fridge down, but this will buy you as much time as possible before you have to. If you get the right pattern, they also look good in your refrigerator too.
“Choose a Stylish Metal Shower Caddy for Your Kitchen”
Shower caddies help you organize your items. They’re designed for that, after all. But you can do even better, and get yourself a metal one to use for the kitchen. They can do the work of organizing and they can do it while looking good too. Or, they may be simply a solution for greens in your kitchen. You can literally just fill them with pots and get them counterbalancing each other.
If you’re the kind of person who has a green thumb, then you can also plant some herbs from your metal shower caddy. Just ensure you keep it near light.
“Organize Makeup Using a Shoe Holder”
There’s a reason there are a couple of different shoe holder hacks on this list. They are simply too good to keep it minimalistic. And this is particularly the case for makeup, which tends to go chaotic quick in a drawer or bag. Instead why not store all your makeup collection in a shoe holder attached to your bedroom or bathroom door! It will help you easily separate things by category or color too.
You can likely make do with a smaller shoe holder unless you have more makeup than you know to do with. It will also convert it into a beautiful sight once all the organizing is done.
“Repurpose a Cake Stand to Display Perfumes”
Cake stands, by their nature, are often decorated in really beautiful patterns that can be used again in a variety of ways. They appear superb when placed in the bathroom or used on a vanity to place soaps or perfumes. Just be sure to buy one that already sorta goes with your bathroom’s decor. If they don’t fit, you can also repaint them, however.
Either way, they will clear some space on your drawers and bring some sophistication wherever you put it. Soaps also look very beautiful displayed like this.
“Declutter Your Car Using Carabiner Clips”
It can be as annoying as trying to organize your house all the time, yes, sometimes keeping your car out of clutter is also hard. So why not grab a few inexpensive carabiner clips you can hang stuff from? This is better than simply tossing everything into the back seat. Hit one of those sharp curves just a little too quickly, and your back seat becomes a projectile, or the floor.
But you don’t have to worry about your stuff; if they’re latched to carabiner clips, everything’s going to be nice and neat. Will also ensure not having to clear your seats if you have any person accompanying you.
“Maximize Space with Storage Hooks”
Storage hooks tend to be great little gadgets for organizing the garage or a workbench, but most people don’t consider them for their kitchens. They should really be able to, too, because there are plenty of things to hang – spoons, spatulas, pots, pans, etc. They’re another option for inside a kitchen cabinet door so you don’t have to clutter up your walls or if you just like things tucked out of sight.
Also, these sickles come in distinct shapes, powers, and colors; hence, you can get the sort that meets your prerequisites. They are also super simple to install and typically do not entail drills.
“Store Candy in Transparent Jars”
Everyone loves a glass jar of goodies and candy, right? They definitely add a pop to a room with so many bright and colorful candies stored inside as well as a completely different feel to the kitchen space. If you like this idea then make sure to pick up a couple of glass jars as you can typically grab a few cheap! You may also wish to pull out some candy too.
Drawback: You may end up snacking more than you normally would, but it is not the worst thing in the world if you eat one candy from time to time.
“Transform Plastic Pencil Trays into Spice Racks”
Spice racks — Plastic pencil trays into spice racks Typically, they are of a bigger size so that you could put two-three spices in them and you can hang them over one another. They can also be displayed, like in this photo, or affixed to the inside of a kitchen cabinet’s door if you prefer to conceal it but still want it handy.
Or pop them up on your wall next to your stove. Just don’t forget to bring an adhesive tape, so you can paste them anywhere you want.
“Build a Stylish Spice Rack for Your Kitchen”
Spice racks are perfect for keeping spices in order, but c’mon, how often do you refill the container? Otherwise, why not use your spice rack to tidy away all of your stationery. Store items such as paper clips, staples, sticky notes, batteries, etc. with it. Which means your stationery drawer can finally be put to other use, ideally something a tad less clutter-evolving.
If you really never had a need for a stationery organizer, then maybe you would wish to use it to organize other odds and ends in your kitchen area or shower room drawers.
“Organize Cans Using File Holders”
Cans are already decent at being planet-friendly, packing light, but if you have a cupboard that needs some lovin’, you might try this hack. The worst thing you want is to take a can from the cabinet, and a whole pile of their neighbors fall from above in tatters. Use a file holder to stand and sort your cans instead. Those will work great and will save you some space.
Even easier to restock, and in case you need a can, so has been done. But wait—conatiner cans are not where the fun stops either; you can store coke cans too.
“Convert Cardboard Boxes into Baskets”
We have all seen similar baskets like the ones above in shops! And while those baskets are super handy for storing stuff away, you do not need to go all out and buy the baskets themselves from the stores. You can easily make your own. Which requires just a few rolls of twine, cardboard boxes and clothes. Except instead you can just bind your cardboard boxes up with some twine and place your fabric on the inside and you have the same for a third of the price.
They have a variable use depending on size, and you could use them for a few different things. For instance, the boxes look amazing sitting on the floor of a bathroom or underneath a table.
“Prevent Creases by Attaching Pipe Cleaners to Hangers”
If you keep getting frustrated with pulling clothes out of the closet only to realize it’s wrinkled, we have that covered, also. Add some pipe cleaners to your hangers to help keep them crease-free. Simply curl a pipe cleaner onto either side of your hanger, and they should help and keep your clothes taut and put together for the next time you retrieve them.
They will also stop your clothes from sliding off the hanger onto the floor!! You can get a whole pack of them, which you can use on all of your closet hangers.
“A DIY Project for Showcasing Your Jewelry”
If the answer is yes, you love to wear jewelry but hate the multiple chains and different caskets of junk, then you can buy wire jewelry holders. If you do, then here’s an adorable and easy DIY project you can throw together in no time to keep your jewelry better organized. Grab a few saucers or small plates and low candle holders. Use hot glue to stick the plates onto the candle holders and you have yourself a cute jewelry holder!
Just do a pyramid sort of thing with your plates and ensure that you get plates of different sizes so everything comes out balanced when you are done— like the ones at the top and on the centre are the small plates.
“Transform a Box Organizer into a Baby Station”
These little boxes are often found at dollar stores, and though they are great for tossing in the closet, they’re also perfect for keeping baby items in order. If you just stash them with wipes, diapers, some baby powder, and whatever else you need, you can create makeshift little baby stations. And if you fancy yourselves as a creative type, add décor with ribbons and stickers to give it a personal touch.
One box will be sufficient, but if you only have a pile of baby items laying around, you can also conceal more inside a drawer or cabinet and just toss the boxes and baby stuff in there.
“Make Your Own Custom Bookends”
This is another darling hack we never even would of thought! The simplest plastic animals can become decorative bookends. Pick up a few of the ones that you like from the dollar store, glue them to a block of wood and paint with gold leaf. You can expect them to emerge looking similar to the figures in this photograph. Obviously, you can use whatever size of figures and blocks of wood you require.
But be sure to coat the thing with sealant or clear coat when you’re done; some gloss never hurts, and it helps to make the paint not peel as quickly.
“Use Cupcake Baking Trays to Organize Food for Picnics”
Picnics (and you should go on a picnic because picnics are cool, man) can be messy affairs, with slippery beverages and nosh spilling all over the place at a moment’s notice. The good news is that we can easily solve this problem using cupcakes and muffin trays. They create a good base for placing drinks, cup, and food when eating outdoors. You can also find them at the store for fairly cheap.
Still the sweetest part just might be, they make you want to plan more picnics and bake more cupcakes – which doesn’t sound like that bad of an idea to us.
“Store Ironing Supplies in a Basket”
One of the greatest benefits of organization is that it can motivate you to do that which you might otherwise put off. And if you are that person that always avoids ironing, then this one is for you! Store all of your ironing bits and bobs in a basket on the wall above | Take it or Leave it Sounds so easy — make your own ironing station to improve the experience of ironing your clothes and feeling you will never hate ironing again!
And even if you already like ironing or you enjoy the laundry, having a designated space for all your laundry pursuits makes sense, you know?
“Create Your Own Terrarium with Picture Frames”
A terrarium could look good anywhere you put it, but also → intimidating. Fortunately it doesn’t have to be that way. You’ll actually only need a couple of long frames for photos and some glue for the wood. Join together the frames through wood glue, and then just place the whole thing on top of your potted plants. You could just add some soil to a tray and put it on top of it, if you want to take it further!
A good way to liven up an area and insert some nature into just about any space. Nevertheless, terrariums are particularly attractive in the area of kitchens and bathrooms. You can even use one for growing herbs.
“Organize Your Car with Popsicle Molds”
I mean, you could use just about any container you find to help organize a car better, but popsicle molds typically fit better, and you’re donning a lot of dividers. And the best part: They’re so inexpensive, and once in your car, they simply appear like any other plastic container. You can put your keys and stuff in there or just use them to sort and store loose change as they are cumbersome.
This is great little hack, as when it comes to clutter, your car’s center console is typically one of the worst offenders, as most of us just throw things in there while on the go.
“Organize Bath Toys Using a Shower Rod”
If you have children, you probably have a shower rod and curtain in the bathroom, but the shower rod also works to organize the toys and towels as those kids take over part of your life. Simply take a couple baskets to place toys in, rest them on your shower rod, and insert them on one end of the tub. It will prevent toys from now hanging in the tub when the kids are not bathing.
Not just it’ll prevent you stepping over something the next time, you want to shower or take a bath, it also makes your bathroom: appear more organised and appealing.
“Organize Towels with Wicker Baskets”
Wicker baskets are a really cheap and attractive way to keep small towels organized in your bathroom. Since most bathrooms are white, the brown of the wicker really pops. If you normally keep your towels in a drawer or just stacked on the vanity, then this might be a good solution for ensuring that they don’t get wet. It also just looks more orderly when they’re placed in a basket.
Just make sure to get one that’s big enough to place your towels in but not so big that it takes up a lot of space on your bathroom vanity.
“Make a Decorative Tray”
Trays may not be used as much as they used to but that doesn’t mean you can’t pick one up and repurpose it to be strictly decorative. If you already have a couple of nice jars or bowls lying around then even better but if not, then don’t fret because most dollar stores sell some. Fill the tray with all of the little trinkets you already had lying around but hadn’t brought together yet.
However, make sure to include some vases just to add some greenery in there. Trays also make for great places to display decanters, and crystal cups and bowls.
“Construct a Mask Organizer”
We all hope that one day there won’t be a need for masks, but that doesn’t seem to happen in the nearest future. Thus, you can make your own mask organizer to avoid them from lying around on the table and organize them well. One can build their own rather simply by gluing some clothes pins onto a board, and then hanging that board from a wall. And it will also prevent your bands from stretching.
This board from the photoshopped file is painted, but that is entirely up to, you can paint depending on the color of your interior. On a white background, even just a plain piece of wood would look nice.
“DIY Your Own Mirror Box”
Mirror boxes are great to have for home to store random stuff in or a plant pot, but can be on the more expensive side sometimes. Fortunately, it really becomes much to take up your own. You just need a few mirrors or one large mirror. You can cut the parts by yourself but we recommend that you bring them to the glass shop, that would cut them at a very low price.
Then just stick it all together, and there you have it, your own mirror box, or pot for your new favorite plant, either way you wer able to make that into the perfect home. If you do choose a pot (even though I find the stones to be so much prettier), then something in the smaller end of the scale is great here.
“Hang Scarves with Shower Curtain Rings”
If you find yourself living in a cold climate as well as with a handful of untouched scarves lying around, we may just have found the solution for you. Instead of putting them in a drawer and folding them, where they’re gonna get really wrinkly and take up space, try hanging them from shower curtain rings. This will help it appear neat and orderly and can even help to save a little space in your drawers for other items that you require.
Depending on whether you want to keep your ring of scarves on display or out of the way you can store it in your closet or simply hang it from a door.
“Use Mason Jars to Organize Stationery”
Mason jars are good for so many things, right from stationary to kitchen supplies, organizing, though must be the topmost. Well, mason jars just have a nice look, and a look that belongs anywhere. They can be used as a pen, pencil or any stationery holder to get you organized and minimize landfills. Add some color and variety by changing the colors and sizes too if you wish.
And fortunately, they are more affordable at the store which makes them a perfect desk, table, or personal workspace clutter disposal.
“Create Non-Slip Hangers with Hot Glue”
Are you sick of all the hangers in your clothes falling and wrinkle-resistant? You can spend here on fancy hangers or give this hack a shot. It only requires a hot glue gun and some glue. Simply using glue on your hangers as per the design in the image should stop the clothes from falling down and keep them from getting dirty or wrinkly on the floor.
This will also save you a ton of money because if you go out and buy those hangers that are non-slip, etc then they tend to be a bit pricey.
“Transform Plastic Containers into Drawer Organizers”
Kitchen drawers are some of the most chaotic areas of our homes. And even though they are out of reach, you are regularly opening and digging inside trying to grab imaginable items you require. Next time you go to the shop, grab some plastic containers to put in your drawers. While not every object can be sorted individually like in this image, they help in getting everything sorted per type nevertheless.
If you do have far too many items to categorically sort, try breaking things up by category. Just keep in mind to measure up before you leave so that the containers are in fact going to fit in.
“Use Cans to Organize Pencils and Brushes”
Cans have been a staple in the lives of humans forever as a means to put stuff in. And that is simply because it makes so much sense. Cans can be great to store pencils, pens, markers, brushes and even makeup. Why not try it out and make it your own? Simple to purchase a roll of wrapping paper, or even wrap completed cans straight into wrapping paper and use them to build your very own storage. Then, they can be just about anywhere and they are by far, the best of it all.
Just be sure to grab some paper that coordinates with the colors or decor of your home and you’re set. These are wall mounted or tabletop or desktop
